Winford K (Winkel) Longyear, 87, formerly of Port Byron and Old Forge, passed away Wed, August 25, 2010 at Auburn Memorial Hospital. Mr. Longyear was born in Victory, the son of Raymond and Mary Hare Longyear. He was a WWII veteran serving in the Army. He was the owner/ operator of Winkel’s Gulf Auto Repair in Port Byron from 1955-88. He was a member of the Port Byron Lions Club, American Legion John Cool Post No. 257, and past commander, a 50-year member of the Port Byron Fire Department, a past Town of Mentz assessor, and a member of the Old Forge VFW. He enjoyed having family and friends at his camp in Old Forge. He is survived by a son, Kenneth (Laurie) Longyear of Port Byron; daughters, Kathleen (Kenneth) Spingler of Weedsport, and Laraine (Richard) Roberts of Mason, MI; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded by his wives, Juanita and Faye; and a son, James. Friends may call from 4-7pm Fri, August 27 at the Audioun Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11am Sat, August 28, from the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Weedsport, with military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions to VFW National Home for Children; or the Port Byron Ambulance Fund.
