Wendell R. Gerring, 79, a lifelong resident of South Boardman, died Sun, Feb 23, 1997, at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. 

Wendell was born Nov 19, 1917, in South Boardman, to Robert and Mable (Brown) Gerring. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, and retired as South Boardman postmaster in 1982 after 21 years of service. He was a charter member of the Boardman Volunteer Fire Department and the South boardman American Legion Post, a volunteer 4-H leader, and served for many years on the local selective service draft board. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. 

On Dec 4, 1943, in Kingston-Upon-Thames, England, he married Peggy Sylvester who survives. 

Also surviving are sons Terry, Allan, Brian, and Ross Gerring, all of South Boardman, and Scot Gerring of Kalkaska; daughters Mrs. Maureen Sparks of Cadillac and Mrs. Loretta Schaefer of South Boardman; 14 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brother Glen of South Boardman, and sisters Mrs. Frances Olin of Lowell and Mrs. Gretchen Greenhoe of Belmont. 

He was preceded in death by brother Leslie; sisters Juanita, Marjorie, and Imogene; and granddaughter Jessica. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wed, Feb 26, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Mark McCool will officiate. Burial will be in the Boardman Township Cemetery in the spring. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.
