Walter James (Jim) Van Den Hout, 71, surrounded by his family, passed away after an extended illness Apr 4, 2002, at his winter home in Mesa, AZ.
Jim was born Nov 12, 1930, in Kalkaska, the son of Elgie and Ila McElrath Van Den Hout.
He was preceded in death by his father Elgie Van Den Hout and mother Ila McElrath Tanner, and sister, Joyce Van Den Hout.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet, and five children, Joel (Cindy) Van Den Hout, Jim (Cindy) Van Den Hout, Joy (Clay) Masters, Jeff (Sheryl) Van Den Hout, and Jene Van Den Hout; nine grandchildren; sisters, Jeanette Vipond of Kalkaska and Joan Bartell of Traverse City; brother Gordon (Janet) Van Den Hout of Sparta; an aunt and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served 1948-1952. He served his country aboard the destroyer USS Wallace L Lind during the Korean War. He moved to New Berlin, WI and was united in marriage Aug 1, 1953, to Janet Kau.
He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union and was employed by Arby Construction Co. until he retired in 1984. He later moved to Manawa, WI. Inurnment was in Manawa.
