Verne L. Elliott, 89, of Traverse city, died Fri, May 23,2014 at Munson Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 7, 1924 in Elk Rapids, to Forrest and Lulu (Ayers) Elliott.
He graduated from Elk Rapids High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific-Asiatic Theater during World War II.
Verne attended Hope College for two years and received a B.A. degree from Michigan State University in 1950
On Oct. 14, 1950 he married Anne Essenberg in Angola, Ind. Where they made their home. In 1954, they returned to Elk Rapids where he worked in the family grocery business.
He later worked as a clerk at the Elk Rapids Post Office. He was appointed Postmaster in 1965 and retired in 1984. Verne was active in the Elk Rapids Tourist Association and the Housing Commission.
They moved to Traverse City in 1985 and were active in the First Christian Church of Traverse City. Verne enjoyed golfing, playing poker with his friends and playing cards with his family.
Surviving are his wife, Anne; children, Tracy (Elizabeth) Elliott of Traverse City and Rochelle (Mervyn) Jones of Interlochen; grandchildren, Josh (Ingrid), Olivia and Bridgette Jones, and Tiffany, Lindsey and Carley Elliott; and five great-grandchildren.
