Thomas James Close, 69, a man who spent most of his life rooted in Kalkaska, advocating for the children of its community, died of a heart aneurism on the evening of Thursday, April 24, 2003, while working on his prized Volkswagen at home.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Sandra L.; two sons, Jonathan D. Close (Jessica) of Cincinnati and Jamie Close (Christianna) of Marquette; stepdaughter Julia S. McAnallen of Washington, D.C., three grandchildren, Max and "Maggie Close-O'Rourke Cincinnati, and Jalynn Bea Close of Marquette; and brother David W. Close of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Katherin Close.
Thomas earned his bachelor's degree in 1956 from St. Joseph's College and a master's degree in 1969 from Central Michigan University. He continued his education in the early 90's at Michigan State University.
The Adrian native began his lifelong career in 1959 with Kalkaska Public Schools as a high school history teacher, eventually becoming vice principal and guidance counselor of the middle school. He retired in 2000 but continued working as an administrator for the school system.
Thomas was an active community leader. He was a member of the Rotary Club and was a Lamplighter Award recipient.
In his spare time, Thomas enjoyed working on his house in Grayling, fishing on Lake Margarethe, working on his vintage VW Beetle and traveling with his wife to tropical beaches. He touched the lives of every person he met.
A memorial service was held for Thomas on April 29 at Kalkaska Middle School gymnasium.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home.
