Theodore “Ted” MacKay of Byron, age 85, died Thu, Oct 14, 2004 at the Genesys Hospice Care Center, Goodrich.
Funeral service will be held 11 am Mon, Oct 18, 2004 at the Streeter Funeral Home, 507 W. Maple, Byron. Mr. Bob Brydges officiating. Burial in the Byron Cemetery, Byron. Visitation at the funeral home Saturday 6 to 8 pm and Sunday 11 am to 8 pm with the family present 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm.
Memorial donations may be made to the Byron Community Scholarship Fund.
Ted was born in Flint, MI on Mar 18, 1919, the son of Charles and Salena (Sewell) MacKay. He married Mildred (Mick) Westphal in Byron, MI on Oct 31, 1942. She preceded him in death on Jun 21, 2000. He had lived in Byron since 1929. Ted graduated from Byron High School, Class of 1938. He served in the US Army during WWII, and received the Purple Heart on Luzon Island. He was one of the original Byron Fire Dept volunteers, serving from 1938-1972, served on the Village Church for 6 years, and was a life member of the Reed-Raymond VFW Post 2272 of Durand. Ted liked to travel, camp and collected stones and rocks to cut and polish. Ted trained under the G.I. Bill at Hansen Refrigeration. He worked as a serviceman on commercial refrigeration in the Flint area. At the time of retirement in 1982, he was working for ControlAire. Surviving are: his sons, Chuck and wife Jan MacKay of Byron, Dale MacKay of Lennon; daughter, Janet and husband John Rourke of Durand; 16 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Mildred Root.
