Stafford H. Wood, 50 of Kalkaska, died Tue, Jul 2, 1996, at Munson Medical Center as the result of a heart attack. 

Mr. Wood moved to Kalkaska from Battle Creek in 1972. He served as a teacher assistant principal, and director of business in the Kalkaska Public School system until 1993, when he became high school principal. He served in the U.S. Army and was a former commander of the Traverse City Army Reserve Unit. Mr. Wood held bachelor and master degrees from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He enjoyed running, participating in several marathons, and had qualified for the Boston Marathon. He was affiliated with the Kalkaska United Methodist Church and a member of the Traverse City Track Club. 

Born in Martinsville, VA on Apr 9, 1946, he was the son of William and Catherine Crawford Wood. On Jul 6, 1968, in Ludington, he married Thensia Johnson who survives. 

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Erin Wood at home; one son, Joel Wood of San Diego, CA; also, father to Mary Jane Gay of Traverse City and Paul Matthews of Kalkaska; his parents of Carefree, AZ; one brother, William H Wood of New Orleans, LA; one sister Margaret Happel of Stilwell, KS; his father and mother in law, Durwood and Clara Johnson of Ludington; and several nieces and nephews. 

One son, Chad Wood, preceded him in death on Apr 19, 1990. 

Memorial services were held Wed, Jul 10, 1996 on the lawn of the Kalkaska High School. Connie Bougard officiated. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan, 19022 West Ten Mile Rd, Southfield, MI 48075 of the Leukemia Society of America, Michigan Chapter, 21617 Harper Ave, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080 will be appreciated. Arrangements by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
