Phebe E. Cotton, 89, a resident of Kalkaska since 1929, died Mon, Jul 31, 2000, at her home, Elmaple Farm.
Mrs. Cotton resided in Lupton prior to moving to Kalkaska County. she attended Marion College in Marion, IN and Central Michigan University. Prior to her marriage she was a fourth grade teacher in Haslett from 1931 to 1934. After moving to Kalkaska, she assisted in the family business, Glenn Cotton & Son, and later was a partner with her husband and son in Raymond Cotton & Son. Phebe was a member of the Excelsior Church of Christ, the Kalkaska Historical Society, and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She enjoyed local history, sewing, and flowers, and was the author and publisher of four books.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on Jan 15, 1911, the daughter of A. Lawrence and Elizabeth Tomlinson Dunlap of Lupton. On Jun 4, 1935, in Kalkaska, she was united in marriage with Raymond Cotton, who preceded her in death on Jul 26, 1991.
Surviving are sons Donald (Barbara) Cotton and Glenn (Norma) Cotton, both of Kalkaska; daughters Margaret (Gerald) Ritenburgh of Escanaba, Elizabeth (Myron) Priest of Mancelona, and Jane (Paul) Werner of Saginaw; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Granddaughter Rebekah Priest and brothers Ira and Paul Dunlap preceded her in death.
Funeral services were Aug 3 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; Virgil Peterson officiated. Burial was in Excelsior Township Cemetery, Kalkaska County.
