Peter Carnahan, age 87, of Pearland, TX and Zionsville, PA passed away on Wednesday, Mar 6, 2019. He was born on March 31, 1931 in Buffalo, NY the second son of Margaret Malott Carnahan and Edmund Carnahan. Peter graduated from Amherst College in 1952. After a stint in the army, he embarked on a career in three acts. Act 1: Theatre director in Cambridge, MA, New York, NY, and Mobile, AL. From 1961 to 1972 he was the managing director of The Harrisburg Community Theatre (now Theatre Harrisburg) where he put on over 100 successful shows. HCT thrived under his leadership. Act II: In 1972 Peter joined the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts where he created and ran the theatre and literature program for 19 years. His stay at the arts council included two stints as Acting Director for the agency and in his time he nurtured and advised most of the theatre companies working today in Pennsylvania. Act III: In 1991 Peter left the arts council to become a full time writer. His published works include four novels, two works of non-fiction, a three volume autobiography, and numerous poems and essays. Peter is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Michael, and his beloved wife of 58 years, Frances with whom he traveled the world and had many adventures. He is survived by his sister in law, Anne Carnahan of Green Valley, AZ; his sons Edmund (Jennifer) of Pearland, TX and Brian (Patricia) of Birmingham, AL; and grandchildren Eric and Chris of Pearland, TX, Jack (Ryan Margaret) of Easton, PA, and Sarah of Birmingham, AL. There will be no memorial service. Donations in Peter’s honor can be made to Theatre Harrisburg or to your favorite local theatre company.
