Michael Mobey, died unexpectedly at his home on February 22, 2003. Michael was born June 1, 1949 in Pontiac, MI the son of George and Lena Mae (Stevens) Mobey. He played with distinction on the Waterford Kettering Captains high school football , wrestling and track teams and was known for his speed, strength and humor. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Central Michigan University, where he studied writing and literature, wrote a novel, protested against the Vietnam War and tirelessly sought to broaden his mind. In 1977 he took a job washing buses at the Isabella County Transportation Commission and quickly rose to general manager. Over the next 26 years he became a nationally known authority on rural transportation policy and administration and served on numerous state and national transportation boards. In 1995 he became director of transportation for Kalamazoo Public Schools. He enjoyed a large circle of friends around the state and was much loved for his humor and intelligence. He had a strong singing voice and was known for his encyclopedic recollection of song lyrics and a rousing version of “The Weight.” He was a longtime student of Native American Culture, Scots-Irish literature and the dobro bass. Michael was preceded in death by his parents and stepparents Earl Belisle and Bea Mobey. He is survived by his wife of 22years, Joanne (Willet) Mobey. Also surviving are two children: Wes Conrad of San Francisco and Kate Mobey of Portland, OR. The family will be present Tuesday  from 6-8 pm and Wednesday from 2-4 pm at the Betzler Funeral Homes Stadium Drive West of US-131 where celebration of Life service will be held Thursday 11 am.
