Pvt E-3 Michael Allen Meehan, 20 was killed Saturday in Vietnam, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John B Meehan of Cottage Park US-2.
Pvt Meehan’s death was attributed to a booby trap, according to information received from the US Army. He had been serving in Vietnam since January of this year with the 198th American Division, and was believed to be in the vicinity of Chu Lai.
Pvt. Meehan was born Nov 14, 1949, at Flint, and came to the Sault area with his parents when he was a few months old. He graduated from Loretto High School in 1967, and attended Lake Superior State College and the Forestry School at L’Anse. He was employed in Pontiac before entering the Army in Jul 1969. He received his basic training at Fort Knox, KY and was stationed at Fort Polk, LA before going to Vietnam. He was a member of St Josephs Church at Rudyard.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by four brothers and three sisters, Pat of Jackson; Dan, Steven, Tom, Kathleen, Christine, and Barbara, all at home.
He was a grandson of the late Marietta Dear, longtime Sault resident, who died Feb 25 of this year.
Arrangements are incomplete pending further word from the Army.
