Melford Harvey Wiens, of Flint, age 89, died Friday, August 7, 2009 at Fenton Extended Health Care Center. Funeral service will be held 1 pm Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at West Court Street Church of God, 2920 West Court Street, Flint, Pastor Wayne Dickinson officiating. Burial in Crestwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Biking for Burns or West Court Street Church of God. Visitation 5-8 pm Monday and 1-4 pm and 6-9 pm Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. Mr. Wiens will be at the church 12 Noon until the time of the service at the church. Mr. Wiens was born in Morris, Saskatchewan, Canada on January 9, 1920 the son of Henry and Anna Loewen Wiens and was a resident of the Flint area most of his life. He served as Staff Sergeant in Patton’s Army during WWII. He was a member and past chairman of the board at West Court Street Church of God. Mr. Wiens was a Captain with the City of Flint Fire Department, retiring in 1971 after 25 years of service. He married Rebecca Nazark on February 22, 1996 in Flint. He loved anything with a motor, hunting, carpentry, and golf. Surviving are wife, Rebecca; children, Gary of Flushing, Anne Oper of Flint; daughter in law, Kathy Wiens; 8 grandchildren, Courtney (Greg) Hummel, Stacia Wiens, Jodi Meade, Aaron (Alaina) Wiens, Zachary (Christine) Oper, Tiffany (Derrik) Oper Whittaker, Zia (Megan) Mjtahedi, Ziba Mojtahedi; great grandchildren, Madison McClellan, and Shea Mojtahedi, Kennedy and Aidan Hummel, Brendon and Ryan Whittaker, Tristan, Ashton and Sierra Oper; 3 step daughters, Carole Dewley of Flint, Patricia (Steven) Hooley of Milan, Joan Nazark of Flint; brother, Stanley (Lois) of Florida; 2 sisters, Gladys (Don) Cohee of Florida, Pearl Bohling of Flint; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Jensen Wiens, second wife, Elaine McBride Wiens, son Steven Wiens, daughter in law, Karen Wiens, sisters, Doris, Leslie, and Leona Wiens and Thelma Sheathelm.
