Maurice T. "Abe" Wood, 81, a resident of St. Ignace since 1941, died Monday morning. Aug 26, at Mackinac: Straits Hospital in St. Ignace.
Mr. Wood was born Feb 2, 1910, to Edward and Esther (Marshall) Wood in Kalkaska. He married the former Margaret Jackson of Kalkaska on Apr 20, 1935 in South Bend, IN. He was foreman of Bakery Equipment Manufacturing for Baker-Perkins Co. in Saginaw before moving to St. Ignace.
In St. Ignace, he worked for Wood Brothers Logging and Lumbering, as he had during high school in Kalkaska and in the period preceding his marriage. The firm had operations in Kalkaska, Eckerman, and Simmons Settlement - where Mr. Wood nearly lost his life in an accident.
He later went to work for the Mackinac County Road Commission, retiring at age 62 as maintenance foreman in 1972. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge 369 of St. Ignace and a long-time member of the United Methodist Church of St. Ignace.
Survivors besides his wife include a son and daughter in law, Roger and Tina Wood, of Mason; a daughter and son in law, Maureen and Norman Campbell, of North Muskegon; granddaughters, Melinda and Wendy Campbell and Julia Wood; and a sister, Helena Wood, of the United Methodist Retirement Home in Chelsea.
Five brothers who operated the lumbering business for many years all preceded him in death.
A Masonic service was held on Tuesday.
Funeral services were held Wed, Aug 28, at the Methodist Church in St. Ignace. Rev. Robert C. Watt officiated. Burial was at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens near Pickford.
The family suggests memorials to Recordings for the Blind or another charity.
Arrangements were made by Davis-Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace.
