Funeral services for Leon B. Westover, 71, of St. Ignace, former professional baseball player, who died Thu, Dec 12, 1996 at Community Memorial Hospital in Cheboygan following a short illness will be held today, Sun, at 6pm at Dodson Funeral Home of St Ignace, Deacon Donald Olmstead officiating.
Calling hours are today from 3-6pm.
He was born Nov 25, 1925 in Flint and was raised in St Ignace and played for the St Louis Browns, the Cleveland Indians, and for a short time, the Detroit Tigers, over a nine-year professional career. He then coached baseball and played on teams around the Eastern UP, devoting a total of 53 years to baseball.
An avid golfer, a ham radio operator, and a pilot, he enjoyed fishing. He was a mechanic at Konleās Standard Station for many years, and a test driver for several years in the Sault. He also worked for the Buick garage in the Sault for many years. He services in the US Army during WWII.
In 1969, he married Barbara McPhee, and she survives. Other survivors include a son, Bruce Westover of Apple Valley, MN; two stepsons, Ronald C. Taylor of the Sault and Scott Taylor of St. Ignace; two stepdaughters, Lana Ramsted of Rosemount, MN, and Laura Taylor of Alburquerque, NM; six grandchildren; and one great grandson.
Burial will be in St Ignatius Cemetery.
