John I. Battenfield, 80, of R. 1, Fife Lake, died Thursday at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center after a week’s illness. He was a Kalkaska County road commissioner for the past 19 years, was a member of the Fife Lake Odd Fellows and of the Springfield Township Church of Christ. He was born April 15, 1886, in South Dakota. His parents were the late Jacob and Mary Battenfield of South Dakota. He came to Kalkaska County with his parents at the age of 6 and farmed in Kalkaska County all of his adult years. Surviving are his wife Myrtie; two sons, Glenn and Johnnie, both of Grand Rapids; a daughter; Mrs. Garnet Davis of Traverse City; and a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Wheeler of Flint. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m., at Schwartz funeral home in Kalkaska. Minister Paul Stacy of Escanaba officiated. Burial was held at Clark Cemetery, Springfield Township, Kalkaska County.
