John "Red" Battenfield, 62, of Newaygo, died Saturday night, Oct 29, at the Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids.
He was born John Junior Battenfield on Jun 5, 1926 in Springfield Township near Fife Lake, the son of John and Myrtle Snyder Battenfield. He graduated from Fife Lake High School in 1946. He married Betty J Downey Jul 17, 1948 in Fife Lake.
Mr. Battenfield was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy and was a member of the American Legion #381, the Voiture #721 (40/8) both of Croton and was past 9th district commander. He was a retired truck driver from Rooks Transfer of Grand Rapids.
Surviving are his wife, Betty J; his children Peggy and Dennis DeRidder of Wyoming, Douglas and Emilie Battenfield of Kentwood, Terri and Buck Vander Strolp of White Cloud; six grandchildren; one sister, Jennie Davis of TN; and a sister in law, Lila VanTuinnen of Grand Rapids.
Funeral services are being held Wed, Nov 2, today at 10:30 am from the McKinley Funeral Home in Newaygo under the auspices of the American Legion Post #381 of Croton. Graveside services will be held at 2:30pm at the Springfield Cemetery near Fife Lake.
