Jean Spencer Godfrey, 90, of Traverse City and Kalkaska, passed away Jul 11, 1998 at Munson Medical Center.
She was born Nov 2, 1907, in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada to Lizzie (Murray) and Jack Hislop. In 1928, she married William F. Spencer, who died in 1962. In 1969, she married Arthur R. Godfrey, who died in 1994.
In 1926, she began a career in rural country schools in Washtenaw and Livingston counties. Later she went into administration and retired as assistant superintendent of the Waverly School District in Lansing in 1966. Among her many interests were the Quester's Club in Arizona, and membership in the Michigan Retired Teachers Association. She was MEA State Chairman in 1943,
After retirement from Michigan public schools, Jean spent two years in England recruiting engineers for U.S. corporations. Wanting to return to the classroom one more time, she spent a year with fifth graders as a lay teacher at St. Girard's in Lansing.
Surviving are her son Jack Murray (Lillian Dean) Spencer of Kalkaska; grandchildren Darby Brazie, David Spencer, Gail (Dennis) Grammer, and Douglas Spencer; great grandchildren Troy and Nicole Brazie, and Blair and Cassen Grammer; and great great grandchild Tyler Brazie.
She was preceded in death by her parents in 1958; husband William in 1962; sister Kennetha Clinansmith in 1976, and husband Arthur R. Godfrey in 1994.
Visitation will begin at 11 am Wednesday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Rev. Paul Karges will conduct services at 1 pm, with burial following in Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska.
