James A. Reed, 80, of Dearborn formerly of Kalkaska, died Sat, Mar 22, 1997; at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn. 

Mr. Reed spent his early years in Lapeer County and was employed by the Bostwick Foundry. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, where he served with the 12th Armored Division. Following his discharge, he attended Central Michigan University, graduating in 1949. He later earned his master's degree from the University of Michigan. 

He served as superintendent of the Maple Rapids, Kingston, Glen Lake and East Detroit Schools. He taught and was director of adult education in the Ecorse Public Schools and was a former assistant headmaster of the Interlochen Arts Academy. He moved to Kalkaska in 1982 and returned to Dearborn in 1995. 

Mr. Reed was a life member of Land O'Lakes VFW Pos 8684 and Eastpointe Lions Club. He was also a member of he First United Methodist Church of Dearborn, the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the 12th Armored Division Association. 

Born in Lapeer County on Feb 24, 1917, he was the son of Alva and Pearl (Newcomb) Reed. On Nov 18, 1950, in Lum, he married Pearl Middleditch who survives. 

Also surviving are daughters Jane Reed of Dearborn and Ruth Birmingham of Sandusky, OH; three brothers, Charles Reed of Lapeer, Floyd Reed of Grand Rapids, and Daniel Reed of bliss; and grandchildren Rebecca and Peter Birmingham. 

Brother Austin and sister Elizabeth preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held March 25 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Rev. Paul Karges officiated. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, Traverse City. 

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, Lions Club or the Leader Dog School in Rochester.
