Huston Cowherd, 81, of Fife Lake passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City, surrounded by his loving family.
Huston was born July 25, 1929 in Monette, Ark., to Filmore and Dorothy Cowherd.
He came with his family to Grand Rapids when he was nine years old, grew up in Grand Rapids and was a very active Golden Gloves boxer as a young man.
He married the former Claudina Gilmore in Grand Rapids on April 12, 1964.
Huston worked as a commercial painter until illness forced his retirement.
He had been a Fife Lake area resident since 1966.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, working with wood and stone, being outdoors, boating and driving his John Deere tractor.
He was a former member of the Walton Junction Sportsman's Club, and he dearly loved the time spent with his family.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Claudina, are his sons, Calvin (Diane) Cowherd of Fife Lake and Duane Cowherd of Ionia; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Huston was preceded in death by three children, David, Huston Jr. and Billy Joe; and by his sister, Gladys Beardsley.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton on Thursday, October 28, 2010. with burial following at Springfield Township Cemetery, Kalkaska County. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Thursday.
He dearly loved the time spent with his family.
