Henry Dorsey died at his home at Glen Lake, near Empire, Monday, June 6 at 1 p.m., at the age of 69 years, 11 months and 25 days.
Mr. Dorsey was born at Glen Arbor, June 11, 1859, being the first white child born there, also the first born of John and Elizabeth Dorsey. His parents were among the first settlers and founders of what became Glen Arbor Township, where they lived until they moved to Glen Lake in the fall of 1869, settling in the wilderness and enduring the hardships early settlers were destined to share.
At an early age he engaged in fishing which he continued for several years, later sailing for the Northern Transportation Company, until he settled down to make his home where he lived until his death.
In 1883 he married Mary Brooder. To them were born two sons, Arnold and William. The latter died in infancy.
Mrs. Dorsey died in 1891, and in 1894 he married Mildred Corey. This union was blessed with five children, four daughters, Gertrude, Mary, Minnie, and Laura, and a son who died at birth.
Mr. Dorsey was a devoted husband and father, and took an active interest in the progress and growth, as well as the public affairs, of the community. He passed away as he desired at home, and amid the surroundings that had become a part of his life.
His health had been failing for the past two years, but he was patient and uncomplaining until the end, which came suddenly.
Besides his wife he leaves a son Arnold, of Empire; four daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Coppens of Erie, Penn., Mrs. Mary Johnson of Cadillac, Mrs. Minnie Chalker of Empire, and Mrs. Laura Heisman of Michigan City, IN; five brothers, Harvey, George, and Volney of Empire, Ralph of Frankfort, and Arthur of Petoskey; and twelve grandchildren, besides a host of friends who mourn his departure.
