Helena Frances Wood, 92, of Chelsea, formerly of Kalkaska, Berkley and Royal Oak, died Thu, Oct 14, at the Chelsea United Methodist Home. She was born Aug 9, 1901 in Highland.
Miss Wood moved to Kalkaska in 1902 and attended Kalkaska County Normal School the graduated from Ypsilanti State Normal College in 1932 and did graduate studies at University of Michigan and Wayne State University. She taught school in the Kalkaska area and then at the Huron County Normal School in Bad Axe for six years and then in Traverse City from 1934-1943. She then moved to Berkley to teach and she became the first principal of Rogers Elementary, formerly Hamilton Elementary School in Berkley. She retired in 1963. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Royal Oak, the United Methodist Women and Kindness Circle at the church. Also a member of the Michigan Retired Teachers Association, Past President of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and did many hours of volunteer work at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
Miss Wood was preceded in death by five brothers, Surviving are a sister in law, Margaret Wood of North Muskegon and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Fri, Oct 22 at 2 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 320 W. Seventh St, Royal Oak. Memorial contributions suggested to the church or the Methodist Retirement Community, 809 W. Middle St, Chelsea, MI 48118. Arrangements were made by Kinsey-Garrett Funeral Home in Royal Oak.
