Hazel Gertrude Clapsaddle spent the largest portion of her life as the glue of the Clapsaddle family: she was a very loving, affectionate, generous mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. Her usually calm demeanor hid the soul of a would-be-traveler, and occasional prankster, a dedicated word search expert, squirrel/cat lover, and a killer gin rummy player (who was occasionally known to cheat.) She loved the Oakland Press, Chapstick, and her “snackies”. Hazel was always willing to try new adventures and every job she tackled was well done, including the meals she cooked.
Hazel was born May 17, 1928, the only daughter of Louie and Goldie (Davis) Thompson. She had four brothers, all of whom predeceased her. She completed most of her schooling in Pontiac, moving to Brown City, MI for her senior year. It was there that she met Zane, who became her husband on April 17, 1946. In their 72 years together, they raised four children, Larry (Suzanne), Shari Squires, Randy (Martha) and Brian (Lisa). Hazel passed away on Mon, Jan 22, 2024 in Oxford, MI. She is survived by her four children and many grand and great-grandchildren.
Even though she held several outside jobs, Hazel’s main interest was in raising her children, including members of her extended family. She was always encouraging and supportive. She loved crafting with her daughter, crocheting, driving the dune buggy at Fife Lake and applying green paint to any flat surface. She will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her, and will be forever remembered by the use of her favorite word, “HUH!”, the meaning of which has never been revealed.
Funeral services conducted at Lynch & Sons in Oxford on Sat, Feb 3, 2024 at 2 pm, with visitation beginning at 1 pm.
