Gladys “Goldie” Smith, age 92, of Fife Lake, died, Sept. 14, 2007 at Kalkaska Long Term Care Facility, where she had been a resident for the last four years.
She was born at Sears in Osceola County on Aug. 7, 1915, to Andrew and Ethel (Gilchrist) Wheeler. She lived in Thompsonville for several years, and as a young woman she moved with her family to Walton, near Fife Lake, and was married there to Emery Smith on Sept. 17, 1932.
Mrs. Smith was employed at B.F. Goodrich in Cadillac, Morgan-McCool in Traverse City, and retired from Manton Industries in Manton.
She was a member of the Walton Junction Sportsman’s Club and was an avid outdoors person. She enjoyed walking, fishing, deer hunting, picking berries and loved being with her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Jeanette (Bill) Haskin of Fife Lake; two sons, Neil (Judith) Smith of Kingsley and Curt (Sue) Smith of Fife Lake; a daughter-in-law, Karlene Smith of Traverse City; a sister, Elsie Gauld of Fife Lake; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emery on Jan. 10, 1973; by two brothers, Mark and David; by a stepbrother, Harold Harper; two sisters, Edith Smith and Evelyn Kenney; and by an infant daughter, Vivian.
