Evelyn E. Klein, formerly of Grayling, died May 24, 1998, at Autumn Woods in Warren. She was 89.
Mrs. Klein was born Mar 16, 1909, in Macy, IN, to Lewis and Emma (Baldwin) Eber. She married Robert W. Klein in 1931 at Moorestown.
Evelyn moved to Kalkaska County to live with her aunt and uncle, Lottie and Charles Pontious, at age 8 after the death of her mother. She returned later to Macy, graduating from high school in 1927. After receiving a teaching certificate in 1929 from Kalkaska County Normal, she taught at several rural schools in the county. In 1943 she taught kindergarten at Grayling Elementary and from 1944-1956 sixth grade. She was awarded her bachelor of arts degree in 1956 from Western Michigan University. She then accepted an English teacher/ librarian position at Grayling High School, continuing until her retirement in 1974.
Mrs. Klein was active in the Michigan Department of Classroom Teachers and numerous professional organizations. She served two terms as a Garfield Township Trustee for Kalkaska County. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star.
Following retirement, she did volunteer work through RSVP, including instruction at Camp Shawono. She had a keen interest in Michigan history and genealogy, and enjoyed gardening, china painting, ceramics, and numerous arts and crafts.
In May 1997, she received a Special Recognition Award from the Crawford AuSable School District for a donation which made possible the tile inlay. Dalmatian mascot in the lobby of AuSable Primary and purchase of library books at Grayling Elementary School.
Survivors include children Barbara Gene (John) Ugo of Warren, James (Renee) Klein of Pinconning, W. Richard (Carol) Klein of Houston, TX, and Carolyn (John) Engel of Reed City; 14 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; brother Robert (Reta) Eber of Hamden, CN, and sister Wilma Richey of West Lafayette, IN.
She was preceded in death by sisters Helen VanOsdale and Ruth Brown.
Services were held at Sorenson Funeral Home in Grayling May 29. Burial took place at Plainview Cemetery in Macy. Memorial contributions can be made to the Michigan Commission for the Blind Gift Fund or the Grayling High School Library.
