DEATH: 21 Oct 1944 , Philippines

The body of Pvt. Elmer C. VanCamp, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard A VanCamp, is expected here daily. The remains are being returned for reburial from the Philippines where he died, Oct 21, 1944 of wounds received in the Leyte invasion. 

He was born in Croswell Feb 14, 1924 and attended the Kemp School and Croswell High School. He completed the eleventh grade at the age of sixteen and was then employed by Lindke Auto Sales. When hi parents moved to Belleville, MI, he resigned his position to go with them in Dec 1941. 

He worked at the Willow Run bomber plant until his enlistment in the Army in Aug 1943. On Oct 14 of that year he left for training at Camp Blanding, FL. In Feb, 1944, he spent a ten day furlough with his parents while enroute to Camp Ord, CA. 

In early Mar, 1944, he was sent to the South Pacific with Co. B, 19th infantry. He participated in the landing on New Guinea in Sep. The following month he received fatal wounds in Layte. 

Cecil Service Post No 255, American Legion, will conduct military services here. Members Dean Hunt, Wesley Cook, Louis Olds, Robert Odlum, Hiram Stover, and George Baer will act as pallbearers.
