Earl Everrett Ayers Jr., 82, of Ludington, passed away Sat, Jul 22 at Tendercare of Ludington after an extended illness.

Earl was born in Ludington on Feb 9, 1924, the son of the late Earl Sr. and Louise (Zachow) Ayers. He graduated from Ludington High School with the Class of 1942 and then served in the U.S. Army. On Jul 29, 1955 Earl married Evelyn M. Henry at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ludington.

Earl was co-owner of Ayers Plumbing and Heating which was always a father/son business, retiring on Apr 30, 1990. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion, Ludington Post. Earl was a sportsman and especially enjoyed hunting on Beaver Island, as well mushroom picking. He enjoyed bowling, spectator sports, and dancing. His greatest pleasure came from spending time with family.

Earl is survived by his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Ayers; two daughters, Nancy (Kim) VanNortwick and Sarah (Billy) Buck; seven grandchildren, Joseph VanNortwick, Matthew VanNortwick, Ryan VanNortwick, Cody Buck, Spencer Buck, Garrett Buck and Brooklyn Buck; extended family, the Carters of Sebewaing; one brother, Robert (Jane) Ayers; and two sisters, Helen (Lee) Bortel, and Louise Rechtin. Numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother in law, Alice and Ken Hull , and his brother in law, Harry Rechtin.

A memorial service for Earl Everrett Ayers Jr., will be held at 1pm on Fri, Jul 28 at Oak Grove Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Ludington with Rev. Thomas Boehne officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11am until the time of service. A luncheon will immediately follow the service.
