Colonel Dennis D. Hull, age 56, lost his courageous battle with cancer Sun, Apr 8, 2007. Colonel Dennis Hull was born Dec 10, 1950 to Luther and Shirley (Keck) Hull in Alma, MI. He married Sandra Shaw, Feb 10, 1973 at the Edgewood Church of God near Ithaca, MI.
Colonel Dennis D Hull began his military career on Apr 7, 1969, enlisting in Company A, 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment, Alma, MI. He accepted his commission as a Second Lieutenant on Jun 29, 1975 from the Michigan Military Academy as a Field Artillery Officer. He later served with the 146th Military Police Battalion as the Training, Administrative, and Logistics Officer, as well as the Commander of the Headquarters Detachment. On Jan 6, 1985 he was transferred to the Michigan National Guard Headquarters as the State Mobilization Officer. Two years later, he became the State Emergency Management Coordinator for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. On Jan 1, 2000 he was reassigned and transferred to the position of Post Commander of Camp Grayling where he served until his retirement on Feb 1, 2006 becoming the longest serving at Camp Grayling. Under his leadership Camp Grayling moved forward with numerous modernization programs.
Colonel Hull earned an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from Lansing Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Spring Arbor University. His military education includes successful completion of: Field Artillery Officer Basic Course; Military Police Officer Basic and Advance courses; and the US Army Command and General Staff Officer College. Colonel Hull had extensive background in Emergency Management and Military Support to Civil Authorities having orchestrated support for over twenty (20) State emergencies/disasters.
Colonel Hull’s many Federal Military Awards include a Humanitarian Service Medal, four (4) Army Commendation Medals, two (2) Meritorious Service Medals, and the Federal Legion of Merit. He was awarded the Federal Civilian Superior Service Medal. Colonel Hull’s State Military wards include the State Active Duty Service Medal, two (2) Legions of Merit and the Distinguished Service Medal. Colonel Hull has been a member of the Military Police Corps for twenty nine (29) yearsand has a total of 37 years of military service in the Michigan Army National Guard.
Colonel Hull was a member of the Grayling Rotary, Grayling Chamber of Commerce, Michigan Law Enforcement Association, American Legion, and the Grayling Conservation Club.
He is survived by his wife Sandra; son Austin; brothers, Rodney (Marcie) Hull of South Bend, IN, Tim (Ann) Hull of Ithaca, Brian (Brenda) Hull of St. Louis; two nephews; and five nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Shirley Hull. Services for Colonel Hull will be 11 am Thu, Apr 12, 2007 at the Ithaca Church of God. Pastor James Conn and Chaplain Moore (retired State Chaplain) will officiate and burial will follow at North Star Cemetery. Visitation will be held 7 to 9 pm Tue, Apr 10 and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Wed, Apr 11 at the Barden Funeral Home, Ithaca.
