Clayton, M. Sherwood, 95, a lifelong resident of Kalkaska, died Fri, Aug 27, 1993, at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
Mr. Sherwood was a 1916 graduate of Kalkaska High School and attended Kalamazoo College. He then enlisted in the U.S. army, and served in France from 1917 to 1919 where he received the Purple Heart. Following his return to Kalkaska, he earned an A.B. Degree from Western Michigan University, and taught for 20 years in the Kalkaska Public Schools. Prior to his retirement in 1963, he was County Superintendent of Schools for 15 years. He was a former Kalkaska Village Councilman and Rapid River Township Treasurer. Mr. Sherwood was a member of The Peoples Church, and was a good and loving husband and father.
Mr. Sherwood was born in Kalkaska County on Nov 18, 1897, to Charles and Ella Marshall Sherwood. On Jun 16, 1921, in Elk Rapids, he was united in marriage with Mamie Twing who preceded him in death on Jan 5, 1993.
Surviving are one son, Clayton C. (and wife, Carolyn) Sherwood of Tekonsha; two daughters, Mrs. Clesson (Kay) Ryckman of South Boardman, and Mrs. Peter (Joyce) Keir of Alexandria, VA nine grandchildren, David Keir, John, Jeff, Kurt, and Todd Sherwood, Jane Sherwood Fosburg, Craig Ryckman, Lynda Ryckman Raymond, and Lori Ryckman Brown; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
One brother, Elmer Sherwood and one sister, Edna Lyzenga, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Sun, Aug 29, 1993, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Rev. Paul Karges, pastor of The Peoples Church, officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska.
