Clark W. Berg, 86, a retired Kalkaska Funeral Director, died Fri, Sep 16, 1994, at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
Mr. Berg was born in Grantsburg Township, WI on Sep 17, 1907 to Alex and Amelia Dahl Berg. At the age of 13, eh moved with his family to Ludington from Amery, WI. He was a 1927 graduate of Ludington High School, and a 1933 graduate of the Askin College of Embalming in Indianapolis, IN.
Mr. Berg moved to Kalkaska in 1937, and was associated with the Clapp Funeral Home. In 1940, he opened Berg Funeral Home which he operated until 1956. He was later employed by Wayne Wire Cloth Products, and then joined Roy Vipond in the operation of Roy's Trading Post in Kalkaska.
Mr. Berg was elected to the Kalkaska Township Board in 1940, and served as a trustee for 48 years until his retirement in 1988. For many years he served as Kalkaska County Coroner, and as a member of the Kalkaska Board of Education. He was a former member of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association, a charter member of the Michigan Embalmers Society, The Peoples Church, and a life member of the Masonic Lodge.
In 1990, he was selected as the recipient of the Golden Citizen of the Year award by the Kalkaska County Chamber of Commerce, and in 1993, he was honored by the Michigan Funeral Directors Association for 60 years of service as a licensed funeral director.
He enjoyed reading, cutting wood, and collecting historical photographs, coins, postage stamps and postcards.
Mr. Berg was married on Dec 24, 1935, in Ludington to Josephine Martin who died on Aug 30, 1968. On Aug 24, 1970, in Kalkaska, he was united in marriage with Marie Brill who preceded him in death on Jan 2, 1991.
Surviving are two sisters, Lila Fugere of Ludington and Mrs. Gerald (Gladys) Martin of Custer; one brother, Richard of Montague; one stepson, Robert Brill of Waterford; three stepdaughters, Irma Wyers of Hubbard Lake, Evelyn Edwards of aterford, and Betty Kratt of Toivola; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
One brother Odell; and two sisters, Mildred Berg and Mae Waterman preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Sun, Sep 18, 1994, at the Peoples Church in Kalkaska. Rev. Paul Karges officiated. Additional services were held Monday at the Dorrell Funeral Home in Ludington. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery in Scottville.
