- Philip “Phil” Johnsons life began on September 29, 1933 in El Dorado, KS; the son of Francis M. “Johnnie” and Vivian (Daniel) Johnson. Phil attended El Dorado Junior College (now Butler community College, and graduated from the College of Emporia (now Emporia State University) in 1956 with a bachelor of arts degree, and Wichita State University in 1975 with a masters degree in education, administration and supervision. Phil proudly served his country in the United States Army, retiring as a Major after 20 years. He retired in 1994 as the Director of Purchasing for the Kansas Turnpike Authority. Phil was united in marriage to Sheila K. Stacy on October 7, 1961 in El Dorado. Phil had a servants heart and was a member of several community organizations including the Kiwanis, Elks, Moose and Jaycees Clubs. He served as a board member for the Sawyer Homes. Phil could always be found enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation with the McDonald’s Coffee group. His family includes his daughter, Stacy (Mike) Taylor of Haysville, KS; grandchildren, Alex Deal and Michelle Taylor; niece Lynn Martin (Brad Levier); great nieces and nephews, Jerry (Maranda) Martin, Sherry (Brian) Richman and Samantha (Jordan) Ethridge. Phil passed away on May 24, 2023 in Wichita, KS. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sheila; sister, Mary Miller and his parents, F.M. “Johnnie” and Vivian (Daniel) Johnson. Friends may gather with the family from 5-7 pm on Thursday, June 15 at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 10 am on Friday, June 16 at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home. Phil will be laid to rest at Walnut Valley Memorial Park in El Dorado. A luncheon to celebrate Phils life will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church in El Dorado, KS at 12 pm (following the graveside service). Memorial contributions in Phils name may be directed to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church o to the Phil & Sheila Johnson Fine Arts Endowment at Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS.
