Charles E. "Chuck" Stoddard, 72, of Frederic passed away on Wed, Feb 15, 2006, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
Mr. Stoddard was born in Kalkaska on May 28, 1933, the son of the late Orson Hilmer and Juanita (Clingan) Stoddard. He graduated from Kalkska Public Schools in 1952.
Charles was the husband of Anna Marie (Decker) Stoddard. They were married on Feb 14, 1953, in Grayling and moved to Frederic in 1967.
Charles served in the US Army as a corporal in the Korean War. He worked for the Grayling Laundry, Cadillac Overall for 27 years, and the Crawford County Landfill for seven years.
Charles spent about 17 years as a member of the Crawford County Sheriff's Department Reserves, where he reached the rank of lieutenant, and was commander of the reserves for about 15 years.
Charles was a member of the Frederic Township Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, and had a fire truck dedicated to him. He was one of the first three people in Crawford County to become a licensed EMT. He was also an Instructor for Firefighters training for about 4 years and the Frederic Constable for 20 years.
Charles was also a member of the American Legion Post No106, charter member of VFW Lodge No 3736, governor of Grayling Moose Lodge No 1162 twice, and a member of ASERT- the AuSable Emergency Radio Team.
Charles is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anna. He was an awesome father to seven children, Vicki Ann (Douglas) White of Frederic, Glenda (Joe) Dunckley of Grayling, Patricia (Matt) Gabriel of Frederic, Barbara (Tony) Rose of Gaylord, James (Beverly) Stoddard of Grayling, Russell (Nancy) Stoddard of Capac, and Kenneth Stoddard of Frederic.
He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; eigth great grandchildren; one great great grandchild, godchild, Kendra Harris (Stoddard) of Jacksonville, FL; sisters, Maryann Glick of Grayling, Phyllis Stoddard of Mancelona, Kay (Richard) Garber of Rapid City; and a brother, Kenneth (Dawn) Stoddard of Rapid City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Sally Robinson, and a grandson, Joey Dunckley. Visitation and funeral services were held at Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home with Pastor Brent Bontrager officiating.
Burial will be in the spring at Coldsprings Township Cemetery in Kalkaska.
