Bruce E. Nelson, 70, of Comstock Park, passed away peacefully May 25, 2008, surrounded by family. Bruce was born Dec 5, 1937, in Grayling, MI and graduated in 1955 from Vandercook Lake High School, in Jackson, MI.
He served four years in the US Air Force, 1956 to 59, and was stationed three years in Germany. During his enlistment there, he served as a leading member of the Wiesbaden Flyers Baseball Team, which won the 1957 Air Force European Championship, playing second base, and later pitching. Bruce was honorably discharged in 1959 as Airman 1st Class assigned to the 7260th Support Squadron (USAFE). He was a well-liked, extremely talented, all around athlete. Bruce worked his entire career as a designer of electrical systems for commercial and industrial buildings.
Surviving are his loving wife, Lorraine Nelson, whom he married Jun 4, 1983; his loving children, son, Rick Nelson, step daughters, Deborah (Steve) Hamilton and Denise (Steve) Babcock; grandchildren, Cory (Lisa) Olson, Theresa Olson, Ryan Ashley, Dan Rector, Lindsay (Erich) Elliott, Mark Babcock; great grandson, Alex Hill ; sister, Cheryl Shields; aunt, Ruth Hamacher; a nephew and several very special cousins.
Bruce was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Nelson Root; step father, Earl Root and stepson, Michael Rector. Bruce was very appreciative of the dedicated care given him by his physicians over the years and for the many advancements in the treatment of heart disease. The family wishes to thank Faith Hospice for the gentle and comforting care given to Bruce. Per his wishes, Bruce was cremated.
A memorial service will be held 11 am Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at the Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Dr, NE, Belmont, officiated by Rev. Dr. Dick Woodward. The family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service.
