Our family lost our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother on July 29th, 2016. At the age of 95, Beulah G. Ames passed away at the Kalkaska Eden Center following a brief illness. Mom loved to golf, read, bowl and travel. She was an amazing cook and took great pride in keeping an immaculate house. Proud to be the head of a 5-generation family, you could find her cheering on her grandkids and great grandkids at their sporting events many nights and early mornings, with her favorite dog on her lap. Born on October 23rd, 1920 in Gaylord, MI to Harry and Hanna Swanson; she was their eleventh of twelve children and the last surviving member of their family. A true Swedish family filled with love, hard work, wonderful memories and meals made from their labor. Beulah married Harry J. Hutchins Jr. and had three loving children; Sandra Jeanne, Norman Bruce and Douglas Gerald. Many years after Harry died she married John R. Ames and gained three amazing stepchildren; Julie, Tom and David. John was a wonderful husband that adored her immensely. She resided in Gaylord, Bay City, Alma, Midland, Dearborn Heights and finally in Elk Rapids spending her last six years with her daughter and family. Surviving her are her children; Sandra Pyle of Elk Rapids, MI, Tom (Jackie) Ames of Stafford, VA, David (Ann) Ames of Alma, MI, daughter-in-laws; Pamela Hutchins of Midland, MI, Patricia Hutchins of Essexville, MI and son-in-law; Fran Tracey of Kyle, TX. She leaves 23 Grandchildren, 22 Great-Grandchildren, 12 Great-Great Grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, foster care children she called her own grandchildren, her longtime dear friend Hulda and her special dog Annie that was her 95th birthday present. Preceding her in death were her parents, seven sisters, four brothers, and their spouses, both husbands and her sons; Norman Bruce Hutchins, Douglas Hutchins, daughter; Julie Tracey and son-in-law; Kenneth Pyle. Visitation will take place at the Kalkaska Funeral Home, 152 S. Cedar Street, Kalkaska, MI on Monday, August 1st from 4 pm – 8 pm and Tuesday, August 2nd from 10 m – 11 am with funeral service at 11 am. Following the funeral service, internment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Gaylord, MI. Memorials can be made to the South Boardman United Methodist Church at PO BOX 112, South Boardman, MI 49680.
