Betty M. French, 81, a longtime resident of Kalkaska, died Jun 5, 1998, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
Mrs. French resided in Battle Creek prior to moving to Kalkaska. She was a graduate of western Michigan University and earned a masters degree at the University of Michigan. She taught in the Kalkaska Public Schools from 1937 until 1957, served as Kalkaska Village Clerk, and then served as county librarian from 1962 until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of the Peoples Church, a life member of the O.E.S. and White Shrine, and a former member of the Academea Club, the Kalkaska Historical Society, and the W.C.T.U. She enjoyed reading.
Mrs. French was born in Burlington on Mar 16, 1917, to Thomas and Mable Leonard French. On Jan 30, 1938, in Bowling Green, OH, she married Russell K French, who preceded her in death on Jun 17, 1981.
Surviving are son James French of Middleville; daughters Beth French of Parma, OH, and Sarah Robinson of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren, a great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
A sister, Nedra French, and half sisters Kittie Bole and Edith Hall preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Jun 9 at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Rev. Paul Karges officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska. Memorial gifts may be made to Kalkaska County Library.
