Dr. Arthur F Carlson, 90, of Pensacola, FL, formerly of Mancelona, died Mar 2, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center in Missoula, MT, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born Dec 7, 1911, in Ironwood, the son of A. Frederick and Johannah (Haggman) Carlson. He married the late Freda C Hertsgard on Feb 14, 1942, in Chicago, while serving in the U.S. Army during WWII.
A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Carlson graduated from Northern Michigan University and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. He moved to Kalkaska County in 1975 from East Orange, NJ, where he retired as chairman of the Foreign Language Department at Upsala College. He was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska.
Surviving Dr. Carlson are daughters, Constance (James) Garson of Houston, TX, and Auralee Carlson, Missoula, MT; son Frederick (Mary Beth) Carlson of Pensacola, FL; six grandchildren and a great grandson; sister in law Eileen Hertsgard; and nieces Janice Tesarik and Avis Ann Larvick.
His brothers Fritz and Odin, and sisters Viola and Flora predeceased him.
Interment will be in the spring with a graveside service at Colsprings Township Cemetery.
