Sewell, Allen Richard (Dick) – age 73, died Tue, Oct 16, 1990 at McLaren General Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11am Fri at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Rev. Ben Stewart III officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 5 and 7 to 9pm today. Memorial services will be held under the auspices of the Swartz Creek Masonic Lodge #458 F & AM at the funeral home at 7PM this evening. Those desiring may make contributions to the Mid-Michigan Goodwill, the Michigan Heart Association, or the Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund. It was Mr. Sewell’s wish that those who also want to serve in Volunteer positions in the community may do so in his name, as he was an avid community volunteer. Dick was born in Flint, Sept 21, 1917, the son of Harry and Viola Sewell and had lived in Flint his entire life. He was a graduate of Central High School and had attended Baker Business College. He married Ruby (Gene) Beaver Nov 8, 1947. Mr. Sewell had been employed at Krogers South Saginaw Street for many years and was later their Meat Department manager.  He along with his partner Bill Fickies, opened West Side Market in 1946 and operated the business for many years. He was very active in the training of Co-Op students. Mr. Sewell served in the US Navy and was on the first PT Boat in the South Pacific after Pearl Harbor. He was awarded the Silver Star by General MacArthur for action on Christmas Eve in 1942. He also served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Swartz Creek Masonic Lodge #458 F. & A.M., a member of the Shrine and was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee and an Elder. Mr. Sewell served on the Flint Township Tax Review Board for 10 years, 6 of them as the Tax Review Board Chairman. He was active and served the Goodwill for many years. Surviving are wife, Ruby (Gene) of Flint Twp; 4 daughters, Janet and husband Terry Surles of Plainfield, IL, Jean Marea and husband Al Warner of Brighton, Judith Sewell-Wright and husband Bob of Chicago, Jo Anne and husband Rick McNew of Lemon; 5 grandchildren; 1 brother, Lawrence Sewell of Mt. Morris, 2 sisters Eva and husband Frank Billsborough of Clio, Jennie Woodley of Mt. Morris; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers.
