Albert Osborn, 99, longtime Petoskey resident, died Sep 3, 2011, at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital.
Albert was born Jan 17, 1912, in Harbor Springs, the son of William and Rhoda (Sweet) Osborn. he moved with his family to Petoskey in 1920; attended schools here and graduated from Petoskey High School in 1930.
He married the former Carol Dorsey on Jan 10, 1942. Albert served in the U.S. Army for four and a half years prior and during WWII. He attended Ordnance School in Aberdeen, MD, where he was trained as a control system repairman, servicing and repairing all types of heavy anti-aircraft artillery. and other electrical ordnance. He was one of the first Petoskey men to enter or re-enter the war following Pearl Harbor. he left Boston with 70th Reconnaissance Troop and joined Gen. Patton's army at Utah Beach in Normandy. For his service at the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Metz, Battle of Saint Lo and Battle of the Rhine he was awarded four service medals. Following 18 months serving in the European Theater, he returned to the United States in 1945 and was discharged as a staff sergeant on October 16 at Camp Atterbury in Indiana. Albert and his wife Carol lived on Crooked Lake, in a home he built for them in his spare time. For recreation, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. During his working years, he was employed by Cook Electric on Mitchell St, working on and installing televisions in the early years of the industry. For the past 40 years, they resided in Petoskey and his wife Carol preceded him in death on Dec 18, 2006. He is survived by cousins, nieces and a nephew. Arrangements are being handled by Stone Funeral Home. Burial will be in the family plot at Greenwood Cemetery. There will be no service or visitation, per his request.
